receipts
- 1Plural of receipt.
He stuffed the crumpled receipts into the bottom of his wallet.
The accountant matched the receipts against the bank statements.
Note
The plural does more than count slips of paper. When it means takings, the money a business or event brings in, the word is normally plural: a day's receipts, the box-office receipts. Online, receipts has also come to mean proof of past wrongdoing, such as screenshots, so asking for receipts means asking for evidence. Both uses rarely appear in the singular.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of receipt.
The cashier receipts the bill and hands it back to the customer.
Whenever a tenant pays in cash, the landlord receipts the amount immediately.
Note
The spelling is shared with the plural noun, so the sentence decides which one you have: a clerk receipts an invoice but files the receipts. As a verb it takes a direct object and covers two related acts. One is issuing a receipt for a payment. The other is marking the bill itself as paid by writing or stamping on it.
