Note
Computer graphics uses the word for the step where a program turns a stored model of a scene into a visible picture, working through geometry, lighting, shading and texture until every pixel has its color. Without an article it names the job (rendering takes hours). With one it names the result (a rendering of the lobby). Unlike the artist's sketch or painting, nothing here is drawn by hand: the image is computed.
- 3A particular version or translation, as of a text, performance, or musical work.
Her rendering of the French novel preserved both its wit and its rhythm.
The quartet's rendering of the symphony drew comparisons to older recordings.
Similarinterpretation, version, rendition, performance, translation
Note
Performers have renderings as much as translators do. In Ben Travers's A Cuckoo in the Nest (1922), Sophia weighs her rendering of the part of the forlorn bride against Miss Marie Lohr's. The word suits any interpretation that leaves a personal mark on a fixed original, whether a role, a song or a text. It usually takes of plus the work, often after a possessive: her rendering of the part.
- 4
- 5Present participle of render.
The server is rendering the page faster after the recent update.
Rendering the document into plain text stripped out the formatting.
Note
The -ing form of render serves as both participle and gerund, and it takes its object directly. With the "cause to become" meaning, a complement follows the object: rendering the bridge useless. With the translating meaning, into follows: rendering a passage into English. The noun of the act shares the spelling but takes the and of (the rendering of aid) and has a plural, renderings. The verb form never does.
