renewing
- 1Present participle and gerund of renew.
The council is renewing its push for affordable housing.
Renewing old friendships gave her a sense of comfort.
Note
The -ing form does two jobs. After be it makes the progressive (is renewing its push). On its own it heads a noun-like phrase that still takes an object (renewing old friendships). Most of renew's meanings take an object. Its intransitive meaning, 'to become new, to revive', is archaic, so renewing with nothing after it can sound old-fashioned. The same spelling also serves the countable noun and the adjective of vitality.
- 2Making a person feel pleasantly fresh and different, and giving them new vitality and energy.
Like the first deep breath of mountain air after weeks in a stuffy city.
The retreat offered a renewing break from the pressures of work.
Many find a quiet walk in nature deeply renewing.
Similarrefreshing, invigorating, rejuvenating, restorative
Oppositedraining, exhausting, tiring
Note
An adjective that grades like any other: more renewing, most renewing, deeply renewing. It works after a verb (a walk can be deeply renewing). It also sits comfortably before a noun, often in figurative settings, as when Melanie MacFarland writes in 2019 of a character stepping outside to 'a renewing baptism by rainfall'.
- 3An act of renewal: making something new, fresh, or valid again.
The renewing of the city's old water system cost millions.
Her morning prayers were a daily renewing of hope.
Similarrestoration, renovation, revival, regeneration
Note
As a true noun it behaves differently from the gerund. The gerund takes an object directly (renewing old friendships). The noun takes an article and an of-phrase instead: the renewing of the water system, a daily renewing of hope. It can also be counted, with the plural renewings. An article in front, or of after it, tells you the word is working as a noun.
