Note
The general activity, covering the reports that businesses, labs and governments produce, and standing behind the newsroom meaning, where the news itself is set apart from analysis and opinion.
- 2Present participle of report.
The journalists are reporting from the front lines.
Analysts are reporting steady growth across the region.
UsageCommon patterns: reporting from a place, reporting to a boss, reporting for duty.
Note
The -ing form does double duty. As a participle it builds the progressive (she is reporting live), and as a gerund it behaves like a noun (reporting the theft took an hour). That gerund shades easily into the noun for making reports. The form also carries the verb's intransitive meaning of presenting oneself, as in reporting for duty at six, where nothing is being told at all.
- 3The gathering and presentation of news accounts in journalism, as distinct from analysis, commentary, or opinion.
The paper is known for careful reporting rather than partisan commentary.
Months of investigative reporting exposed the corruption scandal.
UsageOften reporting on a subject, and the set phrase investigative reporting; reporters do reporting.
Similarjournalism, coverage, newsgathering
Note
Calling a piece reporting rather than opinion is a claim about what it contains, which is facts gathered rather than views argued. Investigative reporting is the set phrase for long, digging work that uncovers what others meant to keep hidden.
