selected
- 1Simple past and past participle of select.
The committee selected her proposal over a dozen competing bids.
Voters selected a new mayor in the spring election.
Note
One spelling covers two jobs. On its own it is the simple past (she selected), and after have or be it builds perfect and passive constructions (has been selected). Before a noun it becomes the adjective meaning "chosen". Keep it apart from select used as an adjective, which means privileged or top-notch: a select club is exclusive, while selected members were simply picked.
- 2Having been chosen or picked out from a larger number.
The gallery displayed selected works spanning the artist's entire career.
Selected passages from the diary were read aloud at the memorial.
