socials
- 1Plural of social.
The dorm organized weekly socials to help new students make friends.
Their summer socials drew crowds from several neighboring towns.
Note
The plural is regular, but what it counts depends on where you are. In general use socials are festive get-togethers for meeting people. On the Canadian Prairies a social is a fundraising dance, often held for a couple about to marry. In Ireland it was, in a now dated use, a company's or club's annual dinner dance. The same spelling also names the school subject, which is singular despite its -s.
- 2Clipping of social studies.
Socials was my favorite subject because we debated current events.
The final exam covered everything we studied in socials this year.
Note
In British Columbia, this is the everyday classroom name for the subject. Despite the final -s, it names a single, uncountable subject and takes a singular verb: socials was my favorite class, not socials were. Elsewhere in Canada the same subject can be clipped without the -s, to plain social, so the trailing letter marks the British Columbia form.
