Origin
Borrowed from Middle French sorbet, itself from Italian sorbetto, which came from Ottoman Turkish şerbet and Classical Persian šarbat, ultimately from Arabic šarba, from the verb šariba ('to drink'). It is a doublet of sherbet and sharbat and is related to syrup.
