specialized
UK spellingspecialised
- 1Highly skilled in a particular field, or specifically adapted to one task or purpose.
Like a chef who prepares one cuisine perfectly rather than a little of everything.
Surgeons undergo years of specialized training before operating independently.
The lab relies on specialized equipment that few other facilities can afford.
Similarspecialist, expert, dedicated, technical, advanced
Oppositegeneral, generic, basic, general-purpose
Note
The -ize spelling here is American, and it is also the Oxford spelling in British English, so it is correct on both sides of the Atlantic. The adjective grades freely (more specialized, most specialized) and it fits institutions as readily as people: Stephen Collinson writes in 2024 of "vast, specialized bureaucracies" that demand expertise to run. Before a noun, it often signals narrowness of purpose.
- 2Simple past and past participle of specialize.
The clinic specialized in rare childhood diseases for decades.
He had specialized in maritime law before joining the firm.
Note
One form serves both the simple past (the clinic specialized) and the perfect (he had specialized), and it shares its spelling with the adjective for expert or adapted. Most uses are intransitive and take in, as in specialized in maritime law. The passive belongs only to the transitive senses, where something is specialized, made distinct by form or function. An older intransitive meaning, to go into details, is now obsolete.
