stringing
Noun pluralstringings
Pluralstringings
- 1Present participle and gerund of string.
The crew is stringing new cable between the poles.
Stringing the violin properly takes patience and a steady hand.
Note
The -ing form carries every verb sense of string, not only threading beads or fitting a violin. On a billiard table it means driving the ball against the end of the table and back to decide who opens the game. Among birders it means knowingly reporting a bird, often a rarity, that is not there. The past participle is strung, and the gerund shades easily into the noun for the act.
- 2The act or process by which something is fitted with strings.
The stringing of the harp took the craftsman several hours.
Proper stringing affects how much power a player gets from each shot.
Note
The noun is countable as well as uncountable, and it often pairs with together. Alfred Louis Bacharach's The music masters (1948) calls quodlibets "stringings together of various melodies." In that phrase the act is linking items into a series rather than fitting strings to an instrument. The noun therefore covers both threading things on a line and stringing a harp or racket.
- 3A 3D-printing defect in which fine strings or whiskers of melted material are left across the finished object.
Stringing appeared between the two pillars because the nozzle dripped during travel.
She tuned the retraction settings until the stringing disappeared from her prints.

Note
The fault appears where the nozzle crosses open spaces in a layer. Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron's 3D Printing with MatterControl (2015) notes that printers pull the filament back so that stringing does not occur. Oozing names the same problem. Unlike the noun for the act, this sense is uncountable: a print shows stringing, not stringings.
