sunning
SaySUN-ing/ˈsʌnɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of sun.
The lizards were sunning themselves on the flat rocks all morning.
Sunning by the pool, she finally felt the tension leave her shoulders.
Note
The -ing form doubles the final n of sun, and it works both ways the verb does: with an object, often reflexive (lizards sunning themselves), or with none (sunning by the pool). Placed before a noun it turns descriptive. Wally Lamb's The Hour I First Believed (2008) has porters "as disinterested as sunning lizards." In the Bates method, sunning means exposing the eyes themselves to sunlight.
