Origin
Borrowed from Scots Swethin, Swadne (also Swaden), from Middle Dutch Sweden, the dative of Swede. It was originally used for the people before the late 1600s, and later replaced the native Old English names Swēoland ('Swede land'), Swēoþēod ('Swede nation'), and Swēorīċe ('Swede kingdom') as the name of the country.
