tabled
SayTAY-buhldUS/ˈtʰeɪb(ə)ɫd/UK/ˈt(ʰ)eɪbɫ̩d/AUS/ˈtʰæɪbəɫd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of table.
The senator tabled the amendment, delaying any vote on it.
The motion was tabled after a short discussion.
Note
The participle is a trap, because table itself pulls two ways in a meeting. To table a motion can mean laying it before the assembly for discussion, or, in US usage, shelving it indefinitely. Nigel Harris in RAIL (2022) writes of the benefits of a tabled offer, one laid on the table to be weighed. When readers outside the US share the page, proposed or postponed says it without risk.
