thinks
- 1Third-person singular simple present of think.
She thinks carefully before making any major decision.
The committee thinks the proposal still needs more work.
Note
The present-tense form a singular subject takes: she thinks, the committee thinks. Every other person keeps plain think. It carries all of the verb's constructions. Thinks that marks an opinion, and thinks of brings someone to mind, with thinks on as the rarer variant. When the claim is a guess, it softens it: he thinks it is Tuesday admits he may be wrong.
- 2Plural of think. Rare: the noun is chiefly British and usually singular, as in "have a think."
Note
A plural that runs against the noun's usual habits. The noun for an act of thinking is marked British and is usually uncountable, so counting several of them is unusual and informal. Eric Frank Russell uses it in "Hobbyist," in Astounding Science Fiction (1947). It is spelled the same as the everyday verb form, so look for an article or a number in front of it: two long thinks.
