transitioning
- 1Present participle and gerund of transition.
The agency is transitioning toward renewable energy sources over the next decade.
Transitioning between careers often requires learning entirely new skills.
Note
A participle built on a verb that works both ways. Used intransitively, something is transitioning to or from a state. Used transitively, someone is transitioning a thing, as an agency might transition its fleet. The gender-identity use is intransitive and often stands with no complement at all, as in "she is transitioning." In the progressive it marks a change still underway rather than one completed.
- 2An act of changing from one state, condition, or situation to another.
The transitioning of the school to online classes happened over a single semester.
The team's transitioning to remote work reshaped how meetings were scheduled.
Similarshift, move, switch, changeover, conversion
Note
A true noun, not just a verb form standing in a noun's place. It takes "the" and "of," accepts possessives, and can be counted, with the plural transitionings. Compare the gerund in "transitioning between careers," which keeps a verb's habits and governs its phrase directly. Plain transition can usually do the same work, so the -ing noun is the heavier choice.
