absented
Sayab-SEN-tid/æbˈsɛntɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of absent.
The senator absented himself from the vote on the controversial bill.
She had absented herself from the office for three straight days.
Note
Its living use takes a reflexive pronoun: she absented herself, they had absented themselves from the meeting. Applied to someone else (the war absented him from home), the verb is archaic, and the bare intransitive use, with no object at all, is obsolete. Because absent is far more familiar as an adjective, the -ed ending is the clearest signal that the verb is at work.
