absenting
Sayab-SEN-ting/æbˈsɛntɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of absent.
By absenting herself from the debate, she avoided taking a side.
His habit of absenting himself from staff meetings annoyed the manager.
Note
The -ing form of a verb that today travels with a reflexive pronoun: absenting oneself, himself or herself from a meeting, a vote or a duty. Without the pronoun ("absenting from class"), it echoes an obsolete intransitive use. Absenting someone else, meaning keeping another person away, is archaic. The -ing belongs only to the verb. The adjective absent, as in an absent friend, has no such form.
