absents
Sayab-SENTS/æbˈsɛnts/
- 1Third-person singular simple present of absent.
The senator routinely absents himself from votes he considers politically risky.
Whenever a difficult conversation begins, she absents herself from the room.
Note
A verb form that rarely travels without its reflexive pronoun: she absents herself, he absents himself from the meeting. Using it to keep someone else away is archaic, and using it alone to mean simply 'stays away' is obsolete. The adjective absent never takes -s, so absents is always the verb, and a bare 'she absents' will sound unfinished to most readers.
