blogging
- 1Present participle and gerund of blog.
Many journalists are blogging alongside their regular reporting these days.
After dinner she sat down, blogging about everything the day had brought.
Note
Blog works with or without an object, so the participle can stand alone (she was blogging all evening) or take what is being covered (blogging the trial). The spelling doubles the g, as short verbs ending in a single consonant do. In British slang the same form can also belong to blog meaning "to blag, to steal," and that sense has nothing to do with a website.
He spent the whole week blogging the trial from the press gallery.
She was blogging all evening and never came down for dinner.
- 2The design and editing of a blog.
Like running a small magazine single-handedly: writing, editing, and laying out every issue.
Successful blogging requires regular posting and a good eye for page layout.
She turned a casual hobby into a career through years of dedicated blogging.
Note
The craft as a whole, not a single act of posting: it takes in the look of the page as well as the editing of what appears on it. Being uncountable, it is measured rather than counted, as in a lot of blogging or years of blogging. Weblogging is the fuller equivalent, and bloggage and bloggery are other coinages for the same practice. The verb form names the act itself.
