cashed
- 1Simple past and past participle of cash.
She cashed her paycheck before the long weekend.
The savings bond was cashed shortly after it matured.
Note
One spelling does two jobs here. In she cashed the check it is the simple past, and in the check has been cashed it is the participle following have or be. The passive comes easily because what gets cashed is usually a document, such as a check or a bond. Card players also say a player cashed when they won a payout from a tournament, a slang use. The same spelling doubles as the slang "used up" adjective.
- 2Used up or exhausted; completely finished or empty, with nothing left to give.
Like a battery that has drained all the way down to zero.
By the end of the long shift, the keg was completely cashed.
She tossed the cashed lighter into the trash and grabbed a new one.
Similarempty, spent, finished, kicked
Oppositefull
Note
A slang word for something with nothing left in it. A beer that is cashed has been drained, and a bowl that is cashed has been emptied. It most often follows is or was, and it belongs to casual talk among friends. Where you need a neutral tone, empty or used up does the same job. It can even be graded: more cashed, most cashed.
