globed
- 1Simple past and past participle of globe.
Note
One spelling does double duty for a verb that runs both ways. Used intransitively, a substance globes on its own (mercury globed into beads), and the form is a plain simple past. Used transitively, something is globed by a force, and the past participle carries the passive: the drops were globed by heat. Keep it apart from the 'enclosed in a globe' adjective, where nothing has been made round at all.
- 2Enclosed within a globe or rounded glass covering.
The globed candle flickered steadily behind its frosted glass.
A globed gas lamp lit the narrow alley each evening.
Oppositeunglobed
Note
The glass, not the flame, is what makes a candle globed: the word names a covering, never a shape. It sits before its noun, as in Robin Hardy's Nicole of Prie Mer (2003), where a character takes up a globed candle. It does not grade, so nothing is more globed than another, and its only opposite is unglobed.
