Pluralbooties
Pluralbooties
- 1A person's buttocks.
She does squats three times a week to tone her booty.
The DJ played one more song and told the crowd to shake their booties.
Similarbutt, bottom, backside, behind, bum
Note
It is slang but cheeky rather than crude, and a 1976 song, "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," turned it into a dance-floor command.

Each member of the pirate crew was promised an equal share of the booty.
Note
Its nearest rivals are spoils and prey, and George Crabb's English Synonymes sorts them neatly: the soldier gets his booty, the combatant his spoils, the carnivorous animal his prey. Booty is what serves the captor personally, spoils are whatever marks his triumph, and prey is what feeds an appetite. So a pirate crew shares out booty, while a victorious general displays spoils.

- 3Another spelling of bootee: a soft or protective covering for the foot, such as a baby's knitted shoe, a disposable overshoe, or a neoprene diving boot.
Visitors to the clean room must pull a paper booty over each shoe.
The diver tugged a thick neoprene booty onto each foot before zipping up his wetsuit.
UsageWriting bootee keeps the shoe apart from the other meanings of this spelling.
Note
The footwear word comes from boot and has nothing to do with plunder or the slang senses; they only share a spelling and the plural booties. It covers what bootee covers: a knitted baby shoe, a thick sock worn under a wetsuit, an overshoe pulled over dirty shoes.

The hackers sold their booty of stolen passwords on a private forum.
UsageTo name what was taken, use of: a booty of candies, a booty of stolen passwords.
Note
The extended use is often a joke, dressing a harmless haul up as a pirate's plunder: trick-or-treaters settle down with their booty of candies, a traveler comes home with hotel soaps. The stretch is old; Crabb's diligent bee already returns loaded with its booty.

- 5Sexual intercourse.
UsageUsually after get, often with some: get some booty.

Note
The line from booty as a person is thin, since both are things a speaker chases or brags about; talk of getting some, rather than meeting someone, points to this sense. Jeph Jacques's Questionable Content gives it a victory chant: "I got some booty."

Origins
Middle Low German bǖte, meaning "loot, distribution, exchange," has an obscure origin but is related to German Beute ("booty"). It passed into Old French as butin and then into Middle English as buty or botye. The word may go back to Proto-Celtic *boudi ("profit, gains, victory"), and boot (as in to boot) perhaps influenced its sense.
The word is probably an altered form of botty. Booty in its older sense of plunder may have influenced it.
Formed from boot.
